A teenage girl is found brutally murdered in Montreal, and Inspector Steve Carella (Donald Sutherland) starts working the case from her diary, reading the entries for names and places. Claude Chabrol adapts Ed McBain's 87th Precinct novel, following Carella through interviews with her family and a circle of young people who knew her. Every page he turns points to someone close to her, and the case will not stay shut.
