In the 1970s, George Jung (Johnny Depp) leaves a small-town childhood behind and makes his way to California, where he starts moving marijuana. His business grows into a partnership with the Medellín Cartel under Pablo Escobar, built on cocaine and the millions it brings in. Ted Demme follows Jung and the people close to him, among them Mirtha (Penélope Cruz), and the plain fact running through it is that money this fast takes everything else with it.
