Blue
Derek Jarman wants to describe his own illness, and by the time he makes Blue the disease has left him partly blind, able to see only in shades of blue. So the screen holds one unchanging field of that colour while voices, sound effects and music, among them Nigel Terry, Tilda Swinton and John Quentin, carry an account of his life with AIDS and of what blue has meant. Jarman gives the eye nothing to follow, and the whole film arrives through the ear.
