Anne Marie Chadwick (Kate Bosworth) moved to Hawaii on no one's blessing but her own, and now she shares a beach shack with three roommates and surfs every morning before dawn. John Stockwell keeps her days pointed at the Pipe Masters competition, with the waves, the hotel work and her friend Eden (Michelle Rodriguez) all arranged around it. Then pro quarterback Matt Tollman (Matthew Davis) shows up, and Anne Marie has to decide how much room to give him.
