Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) was a Manhattan socialite until her money disappeared, and now she arrives in San Francisco with her luggage and a pill habit to stay with her foster sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins). Ginger lives in a small apartment and dates men Jasmine finds beneath them. Woody Allen sets her old life of Hal (Alec Baldwin) and the big parties against this one, and the film is about how long a person can keep calling a former life her real one.
