Carly Marshall (Jessica Lange) wants out of a life of Army housing and quiet, and she does not hide it, which makes each new base a little harder on her husband. Hank (Tommy Lee Jones), an engineer and nuclear science expert, is already in trouble with his superiors for speaking against atmospheric weapons testing. Tony Richardson puts the couple at the center, Powers Boothe (Vince Johnson) among the officers nearby, and the wife in the doorway.
