Body and Soul

In a small Southern town in 1925, a congregation gathers each Sunday under a new reverend, Isaiah T. Jenkins (Paul Robeson), who is in fact an escaped convict. Oscar Micheaux follows him as he works the pews for money and sets his eye on Isabelle (Julia Theresa Russell), a young woman who trusts him. Her mother, Sister Martha Jane (Mercedes Gilbert), believes in him too, and so the whole town's faith rests on a lie.
