Why does a young man whose mother begged him not to fight climb into the ring anyway? Charley Davis (John Garfield) turns boxer against Anna Davis (Anne Revere), and the wins bring a promoter named Roberts and others eager to feed his appetites. Robert Rossen follows him as the choices narrow, and the song "Body and Soul" plays under it all.
