Big John McMasters (Clark Gable) is a wildcatter who drifts through the oil towns of the Southwest, chasing the strike that will make him rich, with his partner Square John Sand (Spencer Tracy) beside him. Jack Conway follows the two men across twenty years, with Betsy Bartlett (Claudette Colbert) arriving out West intending to marry Sand. By then both men have staked a friendship, a woman and a fortune on what comes out of the ground.
