Henry Harvey (Dana Andrews) is the state's attorney of a small Connecticut town, a married man with a wife, Madge (Jane Wyatt), and a reputation for fairness. When a priest is shot dead on a street corner, Chief Robinson (Lee J. Cobb) and the town want a name, and every witness points to John Waldron (Arthur Kennedy). Elia Kazan keeps the case in the open, and what Harvey finds puts him at odds with his city and tests Madge's faith in him.
