Christabel Caine (Joan Fontaine) has an angel's face and wants the life of her cousin Donna (Joan Leslie), who is engaged to the very wealthy Curtis Carey (Zachary Scott). Nicholas Ray follows her as she quietly pries that engagement apart, all the while keeping up her affair with the novelist Nick Bradley (Robert Ryan). Nick knows exactly what she is and loves her anyway, and every person she uses stands to lose more than she does.
