Nino Garofoli (Nino Manfredi) leaves Italy for Switzerland with one plan: to earn his place there and stay. He takes whatever work he can find, each job a little more menial than the last, and keeps trying to pass as one of the locals. Franco Brusati follows him through the grind, with a lot riding on whether Nino's stubborn good cheer can hold when he has no country to go back to.
