Three Australian lieutenants sit in a military courtroom in the Boer War, charged with shooting Boer prisoners. Harry "Breaker" Morant (Edward Woodward) and his men say they followed orders, while the General Staff needs someone to blame for the war's irregular practices. Bruce Beresford puts Major Thomas (Jack Thompson), a defence lawyer handed their case, up against that wall, with the lieutenants' lives hanging on a trial the Army has already written.
