Brian Piccolo (James Caan) is a loud, scrappy running back for the Chicago Bears, fighting for a spot behind the quiet star Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams). Buzz Kulik follows their rivalry as it turns into a friendship, the NFL's first interracial roommates, after Piccolo learns he is dying. In the last scenes Sayers holds a trophy in his hands and talks about his friend, Piccolo's wife Joy (Shelley Fabares) nearby.
