“It’s the story of their lives.”

In a Washington network newsroom in 1987, producer Jane Craig (Holly Hunter) runs her days at a sprint, certain of her instincts. Two men pull at her: Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks), a reporter whose brilliance locks up on camera, and Tom Grunick (William Hurt), an anchor with the looks and ease Aaron lacks. James L. Brooks sets them against each other over what a newscast owes its viewers, and whether being good at the job matters more than being good on screen.
