“The most powerful weapon is courage...”

In the late 1870s, Arizona is at war, with settlers and Apaches killing each other across the territory. Tom Jeffords (James Stewart), a scout, is sent out to stop it and finds that the Apache kill only to defend themselves or to answer white atrocities. Delmer Daves puts Jeffords across a fire from Cochise (Jeff Chandler), two men who start with every reason to distrust each other.
