Broken Lullaby

(1932)Directed by Ernst Lubitsch76 minDrama
“Honor Thy Father...And Thy Mother BUT HOW ABOUT OUR ENEMY'S PARENTS? How About His Sweetheart, the Girl We Love?”

Paul Renard (Phillips Holmes) is a French soldier and a trained musician who, in the last days of the First World War, kills a German soldier from the same conservatory. The war is over and nobody blames him, but the guilt stays, so he travels to Germany to face the dead man's family. Dr. Holderlin (Lionel Barrymore) and his household are waiting in a town still hostile to anyone French, and Lubitsch, better known for comedy, plays it all straight.
