Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) leaves her small Irish village for Brooklyn in the early 1950s, where she finds work in a department store and falls for Tony Fiorello (Emory Cohen), a plumber with steady hands and steadier affection. When she returns home to Enniscorthy for a funeral, the life she abandoned calls to her again, and she must choose between the man she loves and the place she knows. Home is not always where you started.
