Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family

Mrs. Toda (Fumiko Katsuragi) is an elderly widow who learns that her husband's debts will cost her the family house. She has to sell it, and she and her youngest daughter Setsuko, who is still unmarried, set out to move in with one of her grown children. Yasujirō Ozu follows the two women from one relative's home to the next, where each welcome comes with a little less warmth than the last, and mother and daughter hold close to each other.
