Henry Brubaker (Robert Redford) arrives at Wakefield, a small prison farm in Arkansas, dressed and processed as an inmate, so he can see how the place runs before anyone knows he is the new warden. Stuart Rosenberg stays close to the details of the work, the count, the cells, the men who run the barracks. Once Brubaker takes the job in the open, he moves against a system that pays well to stay as it is, and every change he makes costs him allies.
