Westgate Prison is overcrowded and run by Captain Munsey (Hume Cronyn), a guard who rules the cell blocks by fear. Joe Collins (Burt Lancaster) and the men in his cell are worn down by it, and Collins gets through each day on dreams of getting out. Jules Dassin keeps the prisoners crowded into the frame, Collins among them, with Munsey's chains waiting at the edge of every scene.
