Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame

Bakhtay (Nikbakht Noruz) is five years old and lives in a cave beneath the empty niches where the Bamiyan Buddhas once stood, and she has decided she is going to learn to read. Hana Makhmalbaf follows her through a village that answers her with hostility or a shrug, until a boy agrees to take her to his school and loses his own place for it. On the way home, boys playing Taliban capture her and the other girls, tear up her book, and threaten them with stoning.
