William 'Buffalo Bill' Cody (Joel McCrea) rides out as an Army scout, taking on the Cheyenne and marrying Louisa Frederici (Maureen O'Hara), a U.S. senator's daughter. Ned Buntline (Thomas Mitchell) turns his name into a legend, and the scout ends up leading a Wild West show. William A. Wellman follows Cody across years of frontier work and applause, a man still deciding what part of himself belongs to the crowd.
