In 1987, a small Californian beach town has a junkyard, and that is where the battered robot B-127 (Dylan O'Brien) hides after running from a war he has lost. Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld), days from turning 18 and still unsure where she fits, finds him and revives him inside an old yellow VW bug. Travis Knight keeps the story on the two of them, a lonely girl and a robot with no voice, learning to trust each other.
