Elaine Goodale (Anna Paquin) is a young teacher who wants to bring the Sioux a place in the white world, and she believes education is the way in. The story starts just after the Sioux victory over Custer at Little Big Horn, following Sitting Bull (August Schellenberg) and Charles Eastman, a Sioux doctor held up as proof that assimilation works. Yves Simoneau tells it through those two men's eyes, and the film keeps its distance from both.
