No one in New York wants an Italian nun in poor health, and Francesca Cabrini (Cristiana Dell'Anna) steps off the boat in 1889 into a city of disease, crime and hungry children anyway. Alejandro Monteverde follows her as she tries to win housing and healthcare from a hostile Mayor Gould (John Lithgow), in broken English, with a bad chest. Dell'Anna plays her small and unbending, a woman in a dark habit among the poorest children in the city.
