Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody) starts a record label in 1950s Chicago and signs Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), a Mississippi guitarist whose sound the city has not heard. Little Walter (Columbus Short), Willie Dixon (Cedric the Entertainer) and Howlin' Wolf come into the circle, and the money, the sex and the fights arrive with them. Darnell Martin spreads the story across a crowded ensemble and lets the grain of the period show on screen.
