Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) arrives in 1930s Hollywood with nothing but ambition, landing a job at his uncle Phil's (Steve Carell) talent agency. He falls hard for Vonnie (Kristen Stewart), Phil's beautiful assistant, who seems to return his feeling until she admits she's already involved with someone else. What Bobby learns, stumbling through love and nightclubs and years, is that desire and reality rarely arrive at the same moment.
