“The Story of a Women's Prison today”

A single mistake lands Marie Allen (Eleanor Parker), nineteen years old, in a women's prison. She arrives to find Ruth Benton (Agnes Moorehead), the warden, who tries to reach her, and Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson), a matron who rules the cellblock through fear. John Cromwell, adapting a story by Virginia Kellogg, keeps his camera inside the walls and gives Marie no way out of the frame.
