Bill Denny (George Segal) is a glum bettor who can't stop, and Charlie Waters (Elliott Gould) is the grinning drifter who becomes his friend. Charlie rooms with two prostitutes, Barbara Miller (Ann Prentiss) and Susan Peters (Gwen Welles), and the pair chase one big payday from table to track. Robert Altman fills the card rooms with overlapping chatter, and the film was the first non-Cinerama picture recorded in eight-track stereo.
