“Killing a priest on a Sunday. That’ll be a good one.”
A man in the confessional tells Father James Lavelle (Brendan Gleeson) that he will kill him in a week's time, for sins he did not commit. James is a decent priest, and he spends the days that follow among his parishioners, including Jack Brennan (Chris O'Dowd), Dr. Frank Harte (Aidan Gillen) and Michael Fitzgerald (Dylan Moran). John Michael McDonagh's film takes up goodness and what it costs to practise it among people who have stopped believing.
