Fourteen years after a rape trial in a small Southern town, Max Cady (Robert De Niro) walks out of prison with a Bible, a cigar, and a body covered in tattoos. The lawyer who defended him, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), hid a document that might have set him free. Martin Scorsese draws Cady closer to Sam's wife Leigh (Jessica Lange) and daughter Danielle (Juliette Lewis), and the whole family is left standing between the two men.
