“The mission was a sham. The murders were real.”

In 1977, three astronauts are about to launch the first crewed mission to Mars when NASA pulls them off the rocket and flies them to a deserted military base. Col. Charles Brubaker (James Brolin) is told the landing will be faked on a soundstage, and that his wife and children are the reason he'll go along. Peter Hyams follows Brubaker as he plays his part for the cameras, and the lie begins to cost him more than he can say.
