Captain Horatio Hornblower (Gregory Peck) wants to bring HMS Lydia across the Atlantic and do his duty, even as the voyage puts him between a Spanish warship and a ragged band of Central American rebels. His lieutenant William Bush (Robert Beatty) stays loyal at his side, and Lady Barbara Wellesley (Virginia Mayo) sails into the picture too. Raoul Walsh, working in Technicolor, keeps the ship's action moving fast and gives Peck's captain a stiff, quiet reserve.
