Diogo Álvares (Selton Mello) is a Portuguese map illustrator, a man who draws coastlines for a living, until his caravel sinks and leaves him on the Brazilian shore. The chief Itaparica (Tonico Pereira) takes him in, and Guel Arraes follows the stranger the villagers call Caramuru as he settles into a household with the chief's two daughters, Paraguaçu (Camila Pitanga) and Moema (Deborah Secco). Then a ship appears with a way back to Portugal.
