“Some people change your life forever.”

Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), a poised woman in the midst of a messy divorce, walks into the department store where Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) works the register. Their eyes meet and desire catches between them. Therese begins a hesitant courtship across 1950s New York, knowing the cost of wanting someone like Carol, while Haynes photographs them in amber light and careful frames, each glance and touch weighted with the danger of being seen.
