Carry On Sergeant

(1958)Directed by Gerald Thomas84 minComedy, War
“It’s all about a Dad . . . a Draftee . . . and a Detonation heard round the camp!”

Sergeant Grimshawe (William Hartnell) has one platoon left before retirement, and he means to leave with the Star Squad prize. What he gets is a batch of newly called-up National Servicemen, among them Private Charlie Sage (Bob Monkhouse), a married man still thinking of Mary (Shirley Eaton). Gerald Thomas started the Carry On series here, and the film finds its warmth in a ragged crowd of strangers slowly becoming a unit.
