Catherine "Cat" Ballou (Jane Fonda) is a schoolteacher come home to Wyoming, where her father's ranch is in the way of the men who want it. When he is murdered, she hires the famous gunman Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin), and he turns out to be nothing like his reputation. Elliot Silverstein stages the revenge as a comedy, with Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye singing the story along, as though fighting back could also be a good time.
