In 1990, Anne Benton (Jodie Foster), an artist, sees a mob killing she was never meant to see, and she leaves town the same night. Milo (Dennis Hopper), the chief killer sent after her, follows from city to city while she trades one name for the next. Hopper, who also directed, keeps her a step ahead of him, and each new town is one more chance for her to be found.
