Leonora Eames (Barbara Bel Geddes) is young and poor, and she wants a life of money and comfort, so she marries the millionaire Smith Ohlrig (Robert Ryan). Max Ophüls shows the marriage as a house she cannot leave, run by a man who is obsessive and prone to violence. When she takes a job with the doctor Larry Quinada (James Mason), the two begin to fall for each other, and neither can say it plainly.
