“Today is the first day... of the rest of his weekend.”

In Brown Valley, Wisconsin, Tim Lippe (Ed Helms) is a small-town insurance salesman who has barely left home, and his company sends him to a regional convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to save his co-workers' jobs. Miguel Arteta puts him among a few veterans, including Dean Ziegler (John C. Reilly) and Joan Ostrowski-Fox (Anne Heche), who treat the weekend as a party. Tim stands in a hotel lobby with his suitcase, wide-eyed, taking all of it in.
