In 1957, on the outskirts of Melbourne, nine-year-old Celia Carmichael (Rebecca Smart) is forbidden to play with the children next door because their parents are communists. Ann Turner follows her through a year of small losses: her pet rabbit taken away, her grandmother found dead, her father (Nicholas Eadie) and mother (Mary-Anne Fahey) always closing doors. Celia builds elaborate fantasies to keep the grown-up world at arm's length.
