The hunger in Midge Kelly (Kirk Douglas) for the title is large enough that he will pay any price, and the people around him keep paying it for him. Mark Robson follows the fighter from the gym to the top, with his brother Connie (Arthur Kennedy) and the manager Tommy Haley (Paul Stewart) in his corner. By then Midge stands in the ring alone, and the people who helped him are nowhere near it.
