In 1919, in the middle of the Russian Civil War, Vasily Chapayev (Boris Babochkin) commands a Red Army division made up largely of peasants who follow him because he is one of them. The commissar Furmanov (Boris Blinov) arrives to teach discipline and politics to a man who has never needed either. The Vasilyev brothers keep returning to Petka (Leonid Kmit), the young orderly, and Anka (Varvara Myasnikova), the machine-gunner, both listening to the commander talk.
