Rotterdam, before the Second World War. Katadreuffe (Fedja van Huêt) is the penniless, illegitimate son of Dreverhaven (Jan Decleir), the city's most feared bailiff, and he has decided to become a lawyer. Mike van Diem follows him through the years of study that Dreverhaven meets with spite at every turn, and Katadreuffe keeps going, needing his father to see that he is worth respect.
