In 1968 America, Charlie Gordon (Cliff Robertson) is a man with a severe intellectual disability who attends evening classes taught by Alice Kinian (Claire Bloom). Researchers led by Dr. Anna Straus (Lilia Skala) and Dr. Richard Nemur (Leon Janney) pick him for an experimental procedure meant to make him a genius. Ralph Nelson stays close to Charlie as the new intelligence arrives, and he starts to ask what was done to him and whether anyone had the right.
