Chikamatsu Monogatari

“The tortured heart behind the cultivated image.”

In seventeenth-century Kyoto, the scrollmaker Ishun (Eitarō Shindō) runs his workshop and household, and his wife Osan (Kyōko Kagawa) stands accused of an affair with his best employee, Mohei (Kazuo Hasegawa). Kenji Mizoguchi adapts a 1715 bunraku play, following the two as they run from the city together. Mohei, who has never said a word of love to her, finds he has nowhere to go but alongside her.
