Children of a Lesser God

At a New England school for the deaf, James Leeds (William Hurt) arrives as the new speech teacher and meets Sarah Norman (Marlee Matlin), a young deaf woman who works there on the custodial staff. Randa Haines follows the two as a slow romance forms around Sarah's guarded silence and their opposing ideas about speech. Sarah scrubs a floor in an empty hallway, and James stands at the end of it, watching her hands.
