Children of Hiroshima

(1952)Directed by Kaneto Shindō97 minDrama, War

Takako Ishikawa (Nobuko Otowa) is a schoolteacher who comes back to Hiroshima years after the atomic bomb, to a city and a set of survivors still living inside what it left behind. Kaneto Shindō builds a fictional story around the real devastation, drawing on Arata Osada's 1951 book of children's accounts. Takako meets the people who got through it, and she carries what she sees into the classroom.
