“The year 2027: the last days of the human race. No child has been born for 18 years. He must protect our only hope.”

London in 2027, and no child has been born anywhere on Earth for eighteen years. Theo Faron (Clive Owen), a former activist now working a numb civil service job, is asked by his ex-wife Julian (Julianne Moore) to get transit papers for Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), a young refugee who is pregnant. Cuarón stays close on Theo's back as the road out of the city opens, and he keeps walking.
